Devices running Cortana, Microsoft's productivity assistant, generally have a microphone enabled. For devices where speech recognition is an onboard feature, it may be enabled out of the box. Speech recognition requires a microphone, either built into the device or installed as an add-on, and that is about it.

If the user is uncertain which commands to use, they can ask Windows, “What can I say?” Far more than an “aided productivity” function, the feature today enables users to perform nearly any Windows command (and even open and run applications) just by using their voice.
